Founded in 1890, GFWC's roots can be traced back to 1868 when Jane Cunningham Croly, a professional journalist, attempted to attend a dinner at an all-male press club honoring British novelist Charles Dickens. Croly was denied admittance based upon her gender, and in response, formed a women's club - Sorosis. In celebration of Sorosis' 21st anniversary in 1889, Jane Croly invited women's clubs throughout the United States to pursue the cause of federation by attending a convention in New York City. On April 24, 1890, 63 clubs officially formed the General Federation of Women's Club by ratifying the GFWC constitution. Since 1890, GFWC's impact has been felt throughout communities across the United States and the globe.
Honoring only one Clubwoman is often difficult but the decision usually becomes clear after going through the criteria. Below are the attributes for the Clubwoman of the Year:
Thanks to everyone who submitted nominations. Here are a few quotes from membership about our honoree:
“She eagerly volunteers for things, always has a smile on her face and has a
fresh attitude and excitement about the club.”
“She has taken on a role that pushed her out of her comfort zone in spite of
the anxiety she knew this would cause her. “
“In spite of her preference to stay in the background, she handled the book
club question and answer sessions each month with grace and skill. She
provided a much-needed outlet for all those who participated in Book Club
during this trying year!”
While our honoree has only been in club for a few years, she has participated in many events and is always willing to help out. Her positive outlook is always appreciated. The fact that this was a non-typical year for us certainly impacted each of our levels of involvement but this Clubwoman kept one of our favorite activities Book Club, going. Please join me in showing appreciation for the WJWC 2020 Clubwoman of the Year, Tina Windoloski!
